ADVANCE VOTING ON TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2008 FOR FEDERATION OF NEWFOUNDLAND INDIANS

Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador: The Federation of Newfoundland Indians (FNI) encourages its members to vote during the advance vote, taking place tomorrow, Tuesday, March 25, 2008, to ratify the Agreement-in-Principle negotiated with the Government of Canada, so the Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland can achieve official recognition under the Indian Act.

"Although the vote to ratify the Agreement actually takes place this Saturday, March 29, 2008," said FNI President, Brendan Sheppard, "the advance vote offers members who cannot vote on Saturday or who wish to vote earlier, the opportunity to vote on Tuesday."

Four advance polls will occur on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., in Corner Brook, Wing's Point, Grand Falls, and Stephenville. Members are asked to refer to their voter card for polling station locations. Or they can refer to local newspapers, their information booklet, visit the website www.qalipu.com or call the FNI office at 1-877-647-2007.

The FNI has developed an official Voters List from its membership roll. All FNI members who are 18 or older on the day of the vote are eligible to be on the Voters List and to vote. Members can confirm that they are on the list by visiting the www.qalipu.com website or by contacting the FNI or the ratification officer in advance of the vote.

FNI members are encouraged to contact the FNI if they are not on the list. On voting day, eligible voters whose names are not on the Voters List may have their names added by producing evidence of FNI membership and of age.

The vote to ratify the Agreement-in-Principle for the recognition of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2008, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Polling stations will be set up in 18 locations in the central and western regions of Newfoundland.
